Fashion Museum Bath

We are creating the UK’s museum dedicated to the transformative power of fashion, with a pioneering collection to inspire, challenge and spark ideas. It will champion fashion’s transformative power as a global industry and expression of creativity, culture and identity.

The Museum will showcase and celebrate the Fashion Museum Collection - a designated collection of outstanding significance containing 100,000 objects and spanning 400 years of creativity, from 1600 to the present day. The variety and extent of the collection, which will be accessible in a single Museum, sets it out as rare and unusual on an international scale.

Located in the Grade II listed Old Post Office in the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath, the museum will bring fashion to life for local and global audiences. The building will be transformed, restored, and repaired into a ‘Museum on the high street’ – the ideal space to showcase more of the Collection through new gallery and learning spaces.

The new Fashion Museum Bath will open in 2030.

The location: The Old Post Office

The project will bring back to life the Grade II listed ‘Old Post Office’, a key building in Bath and one of only a few listed 20th century buildings in the City Centre. It will regenerate a key heritage building that has fallen into disrepair and the building will be designed as an exemplar of environmentally sustainable retrofit.

The building will be transformed into a modern museum, positioned on the high street and accessible via active travel and public transport routes. With 3500 sqm of museum space, the building more than doubles the size of the former fashion museum and offers a transformational change in scale.

The location of the new Museum also acts as a ‘gateway’ to the area of the city known as the Milsom Quarter. Bath & North East Somerset Council has an ongoing plan to regenerate this area, and the Old Post Office’s location affords it the opportunity to act as an anchor institution in this transformational regeneration project.

The Architects: 6a

Our landmark project will see architects 6a preserve and transform Bath’s Grade II listed Old Post Office into a state-of-the-art 21st-century Museum housing galleries and learning spaces, and serving as a hub for local, national, and international communities.

6a architects was founded by Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald in 2001. The London based studio has won an international reputation for its award-winning projects with a specialism for sensitively transforming historic spaces for cultural and educational projects. It has completed several public galleries which have garnered support from critics, artists and visitors alike including South London Gallery, the Centre for Arts, Research and Alliances in New York, and MK Gallery in Milton Keynes.
